All the new Victorian road safety rules
To view a copy of all Victoria’s road safety rules that commenced on 9 November, go to www.legislation.vic.gov.au and follow the instructions below:
1. Click on ‘Victorian Statute Book’
2. Click on ‘List of Statutory Rules by Title’ (on the left hand side)
3. Click ‘2009’
4. Scroll down until you reach ‘72.Road Safety Rules 2009'
In addition to the new road safety which commenced on 9 November, there are other important changes that have been introduced in the past 18 months.
Some of these are:
Tougher seatbelt penalties
From January 2008, tougher penalties for not wearing a seatbelt were introduced.

No front or rear fog lights
The fog light rules states that a driver must not use front or rear fog light while driving, unless driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions.

Railway level crossings
Tougher penalties for level crossing offences were introduced in April 2008. Four demerit points and a substantial fine applies if a driver does not stop at a level crossing with a 'STOP' sign; failing to give way at a level crossing with a ‘GIVE WAY’ sign; or when a train is approaching, entering a level crossing when the boom gate is closing,warning lights are operating, or when the road beyond the level crossing is blocked.
